Drenched In Aqua

Koukla in Face Escentials — May 10th, 2007

I’m currently obsessed with Aqua eyeshadow. It’s the perfect summer shade if you want a change from bronze or taupe.

Today, I’m wearing my MAC Turquatic eyeshadow - it’s a gorgeous aqua shade with loads of silver pearl - which I got last year and is unfortunately a limited shade. They have a similar shade in the regular eyeshadow line called Aquadisiac, however it comes in Lustre formula and I am just not a fan of it. It is too sheer and no matter how much pressure I put on my brush, I couldn’t seem to get the color shown on my eyes and it also doesn’t stick on the skin very well. But worry not, because I have found some other cool Aqua shades from other brands in a variety of texture and formula and here are some of my favorites :

- Shiseido Hydro Powder Shadow in Aqua Shimmer (I have yet to try this formula, but some beauty junkies have been raving about it on their blogs so this will be my next purchase when I come to the Shiseido counter)

- Paul & Joe Eye Gloss # 04 (This brand has one of the cutest packaging I’ve ever seen!)

- Dior 5 Coleur Shadow in Seascape (It also comes with 4 other fab colors that you can mix with the aqua shade)

- Bloom Eye Paints in Sage and Eyeshadow in Azure (The Eye Paints formula looks like it’s easy to mess it up, but the color is pretty)

This rather shocking color is actually very easy to wear. The trick is to make it sheer so you need to blend really well. I applied the shadow on my lid and I blended upwards - creating a semi-transparant wash of color. On my browbones, I just put a vanilla-colored shadow to highlight. That’s it. I don’t mix it with other colors because I want the aqua to stand out. Then I added a coat of dark brown mascara, a shimmery peach blush (This looks more natural on me than a bronzer since I’m very fair), finished with a pinkish coral gloss - and voila! The perfect beachy, summery look! The model on the above picture shows that this shade also works on girls with darker complexion. I am so loving the healthy, sun-kissed rosy cheeks on that fabulously tanned complexion. And I wish I looked that great in a gold halter top ;)
If you’re still intimidated by the color, the alternative is to use an aqua eye pencil. Just draw a line above your upper lashline and on your bottom lashline so you get just a hint of color. Try MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Out To Sea or Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in #07L

*The product shown on the picture is Bobbi Brown’s Surf & Sand eye palette which, unfortunately, isn’t available in Indonesia. But you can buy it online here.

Barefaced Beauties

Koukla in Face Escentials — April 29th, 2007

People magazine’s 18th annual special issue featuring “100 Most Beautiful Stars” of 2007 has hit newsstand last Friday. Drew Barrymore, who’s recently been named Cover Girl’s newest spokesperson, graces the cover as well as being included in one of the 11 stars photographed without makeup for this issue.

Of course, this particular article is made to make us - mere mortals - feel even worse about ourselves. I mean, look at her.

Kidding. But she does look radiant even without any makeup on, doesn’t she? Here’s another gorgeous one who looks just as good bare-faced (if not better) compared to when she’s all done up.

Yup, that’s American Idol season 5’s runner up Katherine McPhee. Don’t you just want to kill yourself now? Hahaha, kidding..again.
Anyway, the other stars who pose with bare faces in this issue are Jessica Biel, Jessica Simpson, Jessica Alba, Rashida Jones (from the show The Office), etc. It’s interesting to finally see how these beautiful girls look when their skin is not covered (you can clearly see the freckles in Jessica Biel’s nose), their eyebrows are not groomed, blemishes not hidden (hello Rachel Bilson’s birthmark!), lashes not curled and other steps that they skipped for this photo shoot. There is also something beautiful about the stripped-down, unglamorous sides that these stars showed in front of the camera that they look almost vulnerable. Like Miss Longoria in this picture.

I applaud them for doing such gutsy move with these pictures. I tried going to work without any makeup on today and I only lasted until lunch time. I took a peek at my reflection from the mirror and before I could say au naturale, I reached for my lip balm, primer, eyelash curler and blush. That’s it. That’s the most ‘no makeup’ I could ever muster.

Sparks Were Flying!

Koukla in Face Escentials — April 26th, 2007

Metallic makeup if not worn properly can look harsh (see KD’s picture a few posts ago). Jordin Sparks, my favorite American Idol contestant here makes it look so lovely. The key is to apply metallic color on one feature and keep the rest of the face soft.
I love how the makeup artist paired the silver eyeshadow - finely blended with charcoal grey so you can only catch the shine when she closed her eyes - with slightly flushed cheek, glossy coral lips and those luscious curls. And OMG, isn’t that dress gorgeous or what?

PS : Did anyone fall for the ’surprise result’ this afternoon? I did! :)

Take It Off!

Koukla in Face Escentials — April 24th, 2007

Because I wear eye makeup almost everyday, I need a good, reliable eye makeup remover, preferably one which posesses the following benefits :

- Doesn’t sting my eyes

- Takes makeup off easily, especially waterproof ones

- Conditions the delicate skin around my eyes

I tried many products from many brands but I was never satisfied with the quality or the one that I liked was suddenly and cruelly discontinued, like the Body Shop eye makeup remover oil - RIP. When I came to the store one day, they informed that Body Shop no longer produces this special oil and offered me another product which they said was similar, I forgot the name - I think it’s Chamomile and the formula is lotion. It wasn’t similar at all. The lotion stung my eyes and took off only a fraction of my eye makeup which left me with a very scary raccoon eyes the next morning! Eek!

The same thing happened when I tried MAC Pro Eye Makeup Remover. I like applying eye pencil really close to my lash line and removing them at the end of the day can be tricky. Pro Eye Makeup Remover doesn’t do the job and I was scared I had stretched and damaged my poor skin trying to get rid of it. The only good thing about it is that the formula is non-oily so you can immediately apply some makeup to your eyes after you remove the previous ones. This is especially handy when you work backstage which let’s admit, most of us don’t do right?

Anyway, after many trials and errors, I have finally found THE one. It’s called Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover. Definitely the best I have ever tried. It takes off even the most stubborn mascara with very little effort. The formula is made for sensitive eyes so it doesn’t sting at all and it leaves the skin around my eyes feeling incredibly smooth. The subtle rose scent gives a relaxing effect. I would be devastated if this is ever discontinued.

The second-best thing that I discovered was MAC Gently Off Eye & Lip Remover. It’s a new product which is very similar to Lancome Bi Facil in formula and by far more superior than the Pro Eye Makeup Remover. It just doesn’t conditon and moisturize the skin around my eyes as well as Lancome Bi Facil but otherwise, very very close and it’s around 40 thousand cheaper too.

My friends also recommended me a much cheaper version of these remarkable removers by L’oreal. It’s also a dual-phase formula and I heard the quality is not far behind from its high-end counterparts. I haven’t tried it but I have tried the one from its sister brand, Maybelline. I have to say, for 39 thousand, it’s actually quite good. It removes waterproof eye makeup effectively, the formula is gentle and leaves no oily residue. The only thing it’s lacking is the added ingredients like cucumber extracts, rose water, etc which make the Lancome and MAC ones feel much more luxurious on the skin.

Isn’t it wonderful to have so many choices? :)

SPF Q&A

Koukla in Ask Fashionese, Face Escentials — April 17th, 2007

Di tunggu jawabannya ya, thx in advance and keep up the good work on the website!

Very good question! So good that I actually had to do a little research to answer it. Hehehe. Like I mentioned before, I am no scientist. So to answer questions like these, I wanted to make sure I get my facts right by visiting several (hopefully) trusted websites. So here’s what I found (pake bahasa Indonesia aja ya supaya nggak ribet :) )

Hope that answers your question!

Transformasi Empat Gaya ‘ From Diva to Goddess’ – PAC KD’

Empat orang Make up Artist terkemuka menciptakan empat gaya riasan memukau untuk PAC KD Martha Tilaar dengan tema Sacred Goddess, yaitu :

1. The Look of Young Goddess By Willy Wahyudi

2. The Look of Goddess of Love By Lucia Tan

3. The Look of Goddess of Earth By Derry

4. The look of Black Goddess By QQ Franky

Because I couldn’t find any picture of Krisdayanti on the website, I had to use the one I found from whodoyouthinkheare. To be fair, this isn’t a very flattering angle of her. But I have seen other pictures taken on the same occasion (during the press launch) and the makeup is that scary.

The foundation is too thick and it gave her a ‘greyish’ tinge which is the result of wrong choice of foundation colour, the shading is not well-blended (plus I hate, HATE shading!), the “tarantula lashes” are downright distracting and the eyshadow color reminds me of tinfoil.

I think KD has a very old-fashioned take on makeup and it’s such a shame because she is a beautiful woman. Why ruin that cute face with such hideous makeup? I can not see how other people are going to relate to this makeup line and the “Goddess Looks” because it seems to me that ONLY KD is willing to try to pull these off.

Well…her and some drag queens performing at Q Bar Bali perhaps.

Fresh As Daisies

Koukla in Face Escentials — April 11th, 2007

I am addicted to a multi-use makeup products that can brighten up my complexion. Be it in the form of powder, cream, lotion, gel - I always can’t wait to get my hands on them especially when I read good reviews about them in makeup alley or some of my favorite beauty blogs.

One of my latest finds is this beautiful compact powder from Clinique called Fresh Bloom All Over Colour. It is very pretty to look at and has a tiny shimmer to give skin the luminous glow we’re all after. The shade I have is called Plum Poppy - I sweep my blush brush over the entire surface and dust it on the apple of my cheeks. The effect is stunningly fresh and pretty. You can also use the lightest color all over your face to get that beautiful, radiant complexion. I tried using the darkest shade as an eyeshadow but it turns out brighter on my lids and made me look like I’ve been punched. So yeah, I’m just gonna use it as a blush instead.

Unfortunately, this pretty thing is not sold in Indonesia. A dear friend of mine got it from overseas for me. It was initially offered as one of the limited edition items from Clinique’s Fresh Bloom collections, however when I checked out their website today, it seems like that they have put this All Over Colour as one their permanent products. So let’s just hope that it means we will soon be able to purchase it in Jakarta!

Hello Dolly!

Koukla in Face Escentials — April 4th, 2007

The good news :

Barbie Loves MAC collection that was a huge success globally finally arrived in Indonesia!

The bad news :

Most of the items in this collection are sold out :(

Luckily, I had the chance to snatch one of the lipsticks which I have been eyeing ever since I saw it on MAC’s website. It’s a cute, bubblegum pink shade called Real Doll. It gives me this youthful, fesh-faced look when I put it on and it doesn’t appear chalky nor does it make me look washed out like so many other pale pink lipsticks out there. I wear it with a pearly-white lipgloss to give it a little bit dimension.

If you like more ‘punch’ to your lip color, you should try ‘Rocking Chick’. It’s a fuschia with silver pearl shade and it looks very nice on my friend who has olive-toned skin. Oh and of course, all the lipsticks come in a limited-edition packaging with the cute silhouette of Barbie on the tube.

The lipglasses are nothing to shout about. The colors look similar to things I already own. The eyeshadow, with the same Barbie silhouette embossed on it, is a different story. Two shades that stood out to me were Springtime Skipper (minty green with pearl) and Mothbrown (smokey charcoal grey). I am still thinking whether I should get one those (or both!) but by the time I’ve come to my decision, they’ll probably be gone already.

Oh well…I guess good things do come in limited editions!

How about you? Did you buy any product from this collection? Did you want to buy any?
