I know, after this particular post, anyone would laugh when I throw them the idea of me going on a living with less journey. To my defense though, they are all quality bags that I will cherish for years and years to come. They are also have been through a few steps of consideration and logical thinking :-)

Actually, the idea of living with less have been intriguing me for the past 1.5 years. I made this post on August 2010 to help me with my purchase decision making process. So have I been living with less since then? Well, let’s just say that some days are better than others, of course. There were times when I didn’t buy anything for a whole month but there were also days when I totally forgot the idea and shopped like my life depended on it. I need to be more consistent.

This living with less concept popped up in my mind when I went on a Europe trip in June-July 2010. It’s true that you’re bound to learn something when you travel, and I wasn’t excluded. Some things I learned;

  • I learned that I look just fine without eyeshadow on.
  • I learned that my hair turns out ok without a fresh from the salon hair style.
  • I learned that my face looks alright without a foundation and lot of makeup on. In fact, I looked fresher and happier (true, could be due to the fact that I was having a really good time there).
  • I learned that I could live with one bag over and over again (I usually change bags at least every other day), same thing with shoes
  • I learned that we don’t need different products for the adults and the kids, such as shampoo, soap, lotion, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc. I felt ridiculous that each of us had different products/brands that serve the same purpose at home.
  • I learned that I could get by with limited clothes and still look nice. It forced my creativity to mix and match.

That was only in fashion and beauty department, I also learned a lot about consumption, consumerism, Eco-movement and having a quality life. For example,

  • I learned that Europeans are very environmentally friendly people.
  • I learned that in Paris, most don’t have an air conditioner in their apartments and the office! Even the stores don’t feel significantly colder than the outside temperatures.
  • I learned they have clothes line in Italy! And I used to annoy my mom for the clothes line in our house and asked her to dry the clothes in the electric dryer instead.
  • I learned that soulless products made in China are invading the world, even in the small alley in beautiful Venice, which saddened me.
  • I learned a lot about life too, which surprised me that I gained so much knowledge from the trip other than figuring out that sale is soldes in French, rebajas in Spanish and saldi in Italian.

Bottom line is, when I came home, I just realized the different kind of life I was exposed to than the one I just saw during the trip. You see, I lived in the US for 10 years. So I was totally accustomed with the American way of living. You know, the fast food, the fast fashion, the SUV, the big house with attic and basement overflowing with stuff, the over the top consumerism, the celebrity worship culture, the everything instant life. Well, not that everything was bad in the US, but a lot of people were having this so called American Dream concept and busy chasing it and shopped their way through.

So when I came home, I de-cluttered my house. Not only I got rid of so many clothes, shoes and beauty products, I also got rid of unused kids toys and other house decoration. De-cluttering my house is a never ending project. It seems that I de-clutter every week yet stuff just got accumulated on its own *sigh*. The goal is to have as little items as possible and the items that left have to be: functional, works great and used often, a treasure or something that holds so many memories, things that I dearly love and have a purpose at home. Miss Minimalist has listed 20 questions on her web that you need to ask yourself when you want to get rid of stuff in your home.

Since it’s a new year, I would like to make ‘living with less’ as one of my new year resolutions. For a start, I’ve already gotten rid of 40 pieces of clothing from my wardrobe and reduced my beauty products collection. I still have to make my way through each room in my house and get rid of more stuff. As a human being, it’s just impossible not to buy stuff, after all, to live is to consume.  So the idea is not to not spend money, but not to waste money. I need to make sure that what I buy is exactly what I need, not because I was swayed in the notion that that product is what I need to solve all of my problems, or what I need to complete my life, or will make me look better, because they will not be one product that will do just that.  It’s actually tiring to be trapped in the consumerism. For example:

  • The amount of time we spend on researching the product! I spend hours and hours online to read reviews, compare prices and features, browse on different kind of looks. And then the visit to the mall or if you buy online the transfer process, the waiting for the goods to arrive and all those little things that add to our to do list, add to our worries and just clutter our mind.
  • The clutter those products make in my house. I’m tired of having disorganized house, having to clean the products, restoring it, maintaining it.
  • The additional products that I need to accommodate that one product. For example if I buy a pair of beige skirt that will look oh so lovely to be worn with red pumps, if only I have the red pumps so next thing I know, I was on the hunt for a pair of one.
  • And so many other things.

So here’s what I’m going to do other than de-cluttering and get rid of my stuff:

  • Keep track on the expenses I make, every single day. I already have an excel file that works just how I want it and I haven’t missed a day. It cringes me to see the number that adds up each day.
  • Using more natural products. I have ditched my conditioner and used virgin olive oil instead. It’s more expensive than drugstore conditioner, but it’s healthier.
  • Cook! I can’t cook everyday but at least I can find a way to cook or bake twice a week. Not only clothes, the over consumption has also made its way to my fridge and kitchen cabinet! I need to check it once every week and make sure the almost expire stuff is used or cooked right away. I have wasted so many vegetables, fruits, cheese and other stuff because of it :(
  • Plant something the whole family can eat. I’m thinking of chilly :D , we always use it everyday and seem to be the easiest to do.
  • Be more selective with the stuff I’m bringing home. Not just the things that I buy but those freebies that look harmless to bring. Working in Female Daily Network and being invited and sent so many stuff make it easy to abandon this rules. But really, I don’t need anymore junks in my house.
  • Never forget to bring my Fashionese Daily green bag. I often brought it last time, only to fill it with the stuff I bought and forgot to take them out when I got home. I’ve never left home without it. Grocery shopping is easier because I’ve always asked for box instead of plastic bag.
  • I always sort the waste at home, something that I haven’t adamantly enforced in the office. But I will do starting this week!
  • In order to have a more peaceful life and spend more time with family, I have also be more selective with everything I read, hear and see. For almost 2 months now I have decreased my online, especially Twitter time significantly. I haven’t watched TV for more than a month now. The first thing I did when I entered my room is no longer turning the TV on, but turning my iPod dock and listen to soothing music. Life is indeed more peaceful when you don’t have uninvited and unnecessary noise around

I guess that’s my plan for now. I’m more determined to make it ever since I watched The Pursuit of Happyness last week. Wish me luck with this living with less journey and I will update in here as I go :) .

  1. somehow, I feel that someone come up with this idea, and decide to start so, because the whole time before is spent otherwise.
but, turns out, it’s not necessarily true. we sure can decide to living with less, from the beginning. I do wholeheartedly agree with each things Hanzky mentioned above, but for sure, someone needs to find their own ‘trigger’, to be fully conscious in living with less.

ps: bag terakhir, ttg more peaceful life, kok aku ngerasa… oh noo… is this a sign that someone start to leave their youth time? :D hehehe… *peace*

    • Hanzky says:

Emang begini kali yah kalo udah menua :D . Ada yang pergi around the world for 1 whole year straight, jadi barang-barangnya dijual-jualin untuk modal selama jalan-jalan. Tapi abis itu jadi keterusan deh.

Hani I’m trying to live with less but it’s not easy yah. kemaren pas pindah2an gw seneng bgt, a lot of things gw kasih ke karyawan2 di rumah. tas2 mulai gw jual2in dan sebagian gw kasih sodara.

  3. mskellybag says:

halah kepencet submit :D planning gw, kalo ada barang selama 3 bulan ga dipake-pake, it’s mean kudu dikasihkan ke org :D untuk skincare, bodycare, makeup, ga lagi nyetok, tp beli kalo udah mau abis ajah.
thanks Hani for sharing. makin semangat untuk live with less even though it’s not easy :)

    • Hanzky says:

Dari 60 sampe 20 tas ran?..wahhh berat banget tuh pasti yaa. Bag is the hardest for me karena belinya pemikirannya panjang bener…but then again gue nggak punya 60 tas sih..hihihi.

Kalo selama 3 bulan masih di situ aja that means they don’t belong there.

  4. nenglita says:

Suami gue nih prinsipnya masuk 1 keluar 1. Mau ga mau gue jadi ‘terintimidasi’ untuk melakukan hal yg sama :p
Tapi akhirnya, perberapa bulan, memang gue selalu bongkar lemari untuk mengeluarkan benda2 yg jarang dipakai atau kemungkinan udah nggak dipake lagi. Kalo tas, sepatu, yah berhubung koleksi terbatas, jadi belum bisa di rotasi deh :D

@Rani, hebat deh, tasnya dari 60 jadi 20!

  5. Ambung says:

Haniii…suka deh bacanya! Ngebuat semangat buat disiplin utk ga buang uang. Gue jg nih msh suka buang bahan makanan kr expired. Dah niat tahun ini musti lbh selektif klo grocery shopping.
Kalo gue, tiap juni sama desember jadwal buang2 barang. Buang disini mksdnya dikasih org. Yg msh bgs bgt buat adik gue (biasanya tas), yg baju2 gitu gue ksh tmp recycling gitu. eh tapi ya, lama2 idup jadi gak ribet loh klo ga kebanyakan barang. Ga perlu waktu 15′ buat mikir blush yg mo dipake, ga perlu mikir dr malam buat tas yg dipake besok. Hihihihi.
Seriously, like rani said, it’s not easy….godaan dimana2. Makanya penting bgt klo buat gue utk punya lingkungan yg kondusif. Punya tmn2 yg jalanin hal yg sama bnr2 bantu bgt! Kayaknya kudu mendoktrin otak kalo ga semua brg yg gue suka harus gue beli , walaupun punya uangnya. Ayoook kita semangat jalanin live with less ini.

    • Hanzky says:

Yuk Rik kita bikin thread ‘Living with less’ di forum..hehe. Emang harus ada temennya nih. Gue kalo abis baca-baca blog tentang minimalism gitu pasti deh langsung tergerak, jadi memang harus diingetin terus-terusan. Bener banget tuh soal blush, my next post will be about beauty products.

  6. nopai says:

Udah waktunya bersihin rumah!
Jeleknya gue suka isi setelah 2 minggu. Jadi langsung kejedak pas liat jumlahnya :)

    • Hanzky says:

Kalo nunggu 2 minggu sih udah keburu kebobolan dong yah Pai :D .

  8. Lorelai says:

Now we watch lots of documentaries from youtube, it’s much more fun!
Ini cuma cara memuaskan diri punya baju baru tanpa keluar duit :D I got really2 nice clothes and get rid of many unused clothes.

    • Rere Khan says:

‘kledingruil’ ini oke bangeeetttt… buat orang2 yang ga keberatan pake second hand clothes (kerennya, vintage deh) ini tuh oke banget buat ngehemat… apalagi seringnya gw tuh ngiler sama baju bukan yang ada di manekin tapi yang lagi dipake sama orang soalnya klo dah dipake kan baru ketauan bagusnya. Duh, adain kayak gitu dong di Jakarta, gw ikut deh pasti :D Batasin aja bajunya yang no more than 200k misalnya :) )

      • Lorelai says:

    • Hanzky says:

Sounds like a simple life you have there ya Nai….boleh dong cerita-ceritanya dibagi di FD :)

  9. erweniati says:

    Great article, Han!
Need to start doing the same thing. Bagian menyingkirkan barang2 yang gak perlu atau gak terpakai sih quite easy to do for me, dan sudah mulai gue lakukan beberapa tahun terakhir ini. Tapi bagian men-stop beli2 barang yang gak dibutuhkan tuh yang paliiiing susah! :D

  10. mskellybag says:

Huahaaha iya Han, gilak juga tuh gw pikir2. Beli tas sih teteup, tp no more impulsive buying :D yg ngegarai tuhh kan blanja2 impulsive.

@lita: iya pas kapan tuh gw iseng2 ngitung, sampe pusing sendiri….hahhahahah

@Rika: gw kalo mlm msh mikir mau pake tas apa….hahahha.

@Widi: start from Skincare! Hihihihi abisin dulu baru beli :D

  11. adiest_gg says:

Mbak Hani, artikelnya keren deh yang ini :-D aku setuju deh kalau dibikinin thread khusus di fd soal ini ^^ and yes you’re right europeans are very environmental friendly people. I once ask my friend here in netherlands why the choose to ride bicycle instead of using bus or motorcycle that is definetly more convenient…and guess what does she answer..It is because bicycle is environmental friendly than using bus or motorcycle!!! I’m shock, because I though she would say that bicycle is cheaper than bus or motorcycle… I do wonder gmn ya cara orang tua, guru2 dan lingkungan sekitar mereka ngebentuk pemikiran yang seperti ini. Btw satu lagi, berhubung belanda itu kecil banget, otomatis hampir semua rumah disini tuh piyik-piyik…tapi ko ya bisa ya mereka ngatur dengan OK jadi kelihatan nyaman and manusiawi gituuu… semua serba well organized, and kayaknya mereka terbiasa dengan prinsip 1 barang masuk = 1 barang keluar, aq sering liat orang buang2in furniture, tv, dll gitu atau kalau ga dijual ke toko barang bekas dsini…

    • Lena says:

kepentingan publik itu dijunjung tinggi di negara2 maju, itu kuncinya imo. so if it’s for a public good, people participate (siapa lagi kalo bukan saya mentality). kalo di indonesia kan, mana2 paling enak buat diri pribadi atau kelompoknya. so what outsiders see as tolerance, is actually people inconveniencing each other, jadi bergiliran gitu. kalo hr ini kamu yg parkir di trotoir, besok saya. anak2 meraung2 di ruang publik gapapa, anak saya juga gitu. dst. *rolls eyes*

Jadi disediain sepeda pake koin/kartu gitu. Kita tinggal ke halte-haltenya aja, ambil sepeda trus kita pergi ke tempat tujuan kita, trus ya udah tinggal aja sepedanya di halte terdekat. Bisa naik sepeda tanpa perlu beli sepeda! Menarik banget kan yah….

  12. Lena says:

travel is really eye-opening, isn’t it.

actually, researching for products is quite enjoyable to me. i learn so much that way, about ingredients, about how things are made, about how the color red is pronounced in other languages (i can say red in at least 6 languages mainly due to ‘researching’ makeup lol). i guess the time you spend when you do something you enjoy, is not wasted.

  13. Ambung says:

@hanzky @rani : iyaaaa…yuk bikin han thread nya. Hihihihi sesekali dong ah kita bahas yg agak dewasa gitu hihihihi

@widi @rani : bener wid, mulai dr skincare. Gue nih dah setahun ini udah ga beli skincare. Nah dlm 1-2 bln kedepan kyknya bangkrut nih krn pd abis semua. Gue pakein stok2 yg lama. Agak bosen n gatel sih pengen beli2 tuh kmrn kmrn, ehhh skrg pas giliran dah pd mau abis rasanya pengen ga abis2 biar ga kluar uang :) )

  14. suki says:

jadi intinya save earth juga nih, soalnya hanzky ga pake lagi electric dryer yang boros listrik, xD

    • Hanzky says:

  15. velicious says:

I love this article dan smua tanggapan2nya..memberikan ide, mengingatkan lebih tepatnya untuk saya yang doyan nimbun barang di rumah termasuk di kulkas. Thanks yahhh…

  16. nitanadaus says:

Yeaahh., love this post so much.. :) Thank you..
Ak sering banget beli-beli buah banyak., trus simpen di kulkas., tp kadang suka males ngupasnya..
Ada ide ga supaya ga wasting gitu..?

  17. erweniati says:

    @Rika, @Rani,
Bener bangeeeet! Gw udah stop beli2 skincare coba2.

  20. dadomalang says:

sorry, mau nambah 1 hal lagi. jadi intinya kalau buat aku, kalau beli trus dipake sih silahkan aja ya, apalagi kalo bisa dipake berulang ulang, utk barang fashion, kan jadi punya nilai ekonomis. yang bikin sedih itu kalo beli dan tyt gak kepake. cuma nganggur cantik di lemari. beli beli barang macam itu yang sekarang lagi aku coba kurangi Han

    • Hanzky says:

  22. Ingke says:

    menarik dan setuju banget :)

  23. amaria says:

love this article. Abis baca langsung dipraktekin dgn declutter isi lemari.
