I know this isn’t a newly released film but I have just seen it a few days ago and I’m sure there are some of you who haven’t. I was so blown away by this movie that I just had to write something about it and share it with you guys.

A Single Man was released on December last year and was directed by Tom Ford. Yes THE Tom Ford. He even co-wrote the screenplay with David Scearce, which was adapted from a book with the same title by Christopher Isherwood.

Now, if you haven’t bought into the whole “Tom Ford is a genius, everything he touches turns gold” idea, like me, you will by the end of this movie. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful films I have ever seen. Colin Firth, who played the central role, received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and won Best Actor in Venice Film Festival, and he really deserved it. I know that the mere mention of Colin Firth is enough to send you girls to the nearest DVD shop but believe me, there are a lot more to see in this film than his naked bottom. (Oh yes, there are plenty )

The movie told a story about Native Brit George Falconer, an English professor at a Los Angeles area college, who is finding it difficult to cope with life. Jim, his personal partner of sixteen years, died in a car accident eight months earlier when he was visiting with family. Jim’s family were not going to tell George of the death or accident let alone allow him to attend the funeral. This day, George has decided to get his affairs in order before he will commit suicide that evening.

Yes the premise is dark and rather depressing but the story was told in such a beautiful and poetic way that it’s hard to peel yourself away from it. The visual is unique and stunning and will take your breath away. It really showed Tom Ford’s artistic side. The cast is perfect, especially note-worthy is Julianne Moore who played as George’s  fabulously sad and broken best friend.

The costume, is needless to say, impeccable. The score by Abel Korzeniowski, complements the scenes perfectly and haunted me long after I finished the movie. It also didn’t hurt that every single man in this film is devastatingly handsome!

Also worth mentioning is Nicholas Hoult‘s performance, whom you may know from his other movies “About a Boy”. He has definitely grown up into a bright-eyed, young man and, if his acting in A Single Man is an indication, he might have a bright career ahead of him.

Overall, it’s an amazing debut from Tom Ford and I really can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us. In fashion and motion picture.
