membatik Mark your calendar! Because this Friday, on the 2nd of October 2009, Unesco will list batik as one of the world cultural heritage from Indonesia. So get involved and wear your best batik, work it in front of the camera and post your picture on Today’s Outfit thread.

The pronouncement will be declared by Unesco at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Heritage in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Referring to that, our President, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had appealed to the public at large to pay our respect by wearing batik on that day. He also mentioned that we, as Indonesian should help in preserving our culture. (source: http://www.tourismindonesia.com)

I have to tell you the truth, not until 7 years ago, I never paid too much attention to batik. I only saw it as the fabric that my grandmother used to wear everyday (yes, until the day she passed away my grandmother always wears batik and kebaya every single day). So to me batik was only for the elderly.

Then in 2002, when I went to Jogjakarta, I walked along the Malioboro street and saw one cute batik dress. It was actually only a mid-length dress with sabrina neckline. However, considering my personal rapport with batik was limited to my grandmother’s wrap fabric, I saw it as the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. (insert appropriate back sound here).  That was the day I finally opened my eyes to one of Indonesia’s traditional beauties. A bit too late, but better than never and I am thankful for that.

Above pictures were taken during Jogja Fashion Week 2008. That showed how the garment can really transform into gorgeous and stunning clothing for every occasion. It’s pretty yet comfortable and now we know it’s also versatile.  From hanging out with girl friends to fancy dinner party, you can always add the touch of batik. For complete picture collection, please check our FD Gallery.

So I will be taking part with so many other proud Indonesians to wear my beautiful batik piece on 2nd October 2009 and we will show the world that we rock and we care for our cultural treasure. Will you join us?

Actually there’s nothing to worry about with Malaysia’s claim as the original owner batik culture.By looking at the origin of the word “batik” (amba and titik), has been very clear from where the language is taken.
