Grey is the new….blue?

Blue has been the trend in nail polish color for the past few seasons, with seemingly every major brand releasing a blue, such as Chanel with Blue Satin, Zoya with Indigo, Essie with Starry Starry Night, OPI with Russian Navy, Yogata get this Blue, and most recently Play til Midnight, and among Asian brands, Etude House with No. 42. But the reign of the blues seems to be officially over with the arrival of grey. Yep, in the world of nail polish grey seems to be the new blue.

Gunmetal grey has been up and coming for a few seasons, and I seem to have acquired a few without quite realizing it. OPI Brand New Skates is my most recent grey acquisition and the idea for this blog actually came when someone asked me for a comparison. Brand New Skates is a silverish grey with a slightly metallic finish and multicolor shimmer, a neutral color for a winter wardrobe that is far from sombre. Others in my arsenal are Creative Nail Design (CND) Hyde in the Dark, a beautiful deep grey with silver shimmer, shiny and opaque with only one coat, and Zoya Freja, a metallic grey with very soft shimmer that you can only see under bright ligts. My very first grey, however, was The Skin Food GR901, a bluish dark grey also with very soft silver shimmer that’s very similar to Freja (but much more budget friendly and, more importantly, available in Jakarta).

Note that for all swatches I used OPI natural nail base coat, applied two coats of polish with the exception of CND Hyde in the Dark (one coat), and Seche Vite top coat (because when I got ready to take photos it turned cloudy and rainy, so I had to take pics the next day, which explains the scratches you see in the pics).

If gunmetal is not quite your thing, there are other options. How about a light dove gray, like OPI Sheer Your Toys, as an alternative to nude browns or sheer pinks. If you dislike shimmers and metallics, you could always go with a grey creme, such as OPI You don’t know Jacques or Sephora by OPI Metro Chic.

At first I wasn’t interested in Metro Chic, it looked too wishy washy, not quite gray, not quite lilac (plin plan gitu), but it kept getting a lot of raves and was often sold out at Sephora, that I had to try it for myself. I’m still not sure about this one, but I could see how this is a unique color that’s the antithesis of conservative; in essence, something new.

yang pasti grey kayaknya the next black in fashion nih.. soalnya i’ve been seeing grey everywhere. trus baruuu aja tadi mikir, ah besok mau meni pedi, pake warna abu2 aaahh.. eh taunya udah di ripiu. asiikk.. !! gue suka yang metro chic deh.. yang zoya freya juga bagus tuh. ah jadi bingung!!

actually, i’m kinda surprised you readers see the difference terutama di antara warna2 gunmetal itu, cool. i was waiting for someone to comment “kok warnanya sama semua?!” hahaha. well maybe i spoke too soon, let’s wait for ayipps…
