Highlighting Vs. Contouring

DesZeLL in Face Escentials — July 22nd, 2008

Nicola B, MAC make up artist from Australia said that as Asian we should be grateful to our very unique feature. One question that she gets a lot from her Asian customer would be on how to do contouring, nose shading in particular – do we need to remind you of the famous number 11 on the nose? She suggests starting with highlighting rather than contouring, because with highlighting you can bring out the best feature on your face. Nicola said on her profile “Highlighting all the high planes of the face with a paler shade of foundation or concealer (the cheekbones, center of the nose, brow bone, top of the lip line and center of the chin) - simple but extremely effective”. So ladies next time when you’re thinking about correcting features on your face, think again! You might want to start with highlighting so that you can do minimal correcting on your face. Because you’ve got nothing to hide, you’re already naturally beautiful.

Nicola picks MAC Studio Touch Up Stick in NC/NW 15 for highlighting (depending on whichever shade fits you the best). This stick is perfect because it’s very handy and easy to use. Use the stick to draw on the area marked pink on the picture below and don’t forget to blend. Whereas for contouring she recommends Studio Stick SPF 15 foundation, the creamy smooth texture will replicate your skin texture allowing for flawless finish. Apply only where you think is necessary because less is more for contouring.

VOGUE Italia : The Black Issue

DYS in Books & Magazine — July 21st, 2008

vogueitalia

The long awaited special edition of Italian VOGUE has finally arrived early this month. It’s the Black issue where only black models appeared in every pages of the magazine. Franca Sozzani, the editor-in-chief of VOGUE Italia created this special edition to draw attention to the lack of black models used in the industry. This issue features over 100 pages of prominent black models, from legendary model Iman, Alek Wek, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Veronica Webb, to fresh newcomers: Jourdan Dunn (the one on the cover), and Chanel Iman. Sadly, I don’t see any photos of Brandi Quiñones. I like her better than Tyra Banks and she did pretty well in mid 90’s doing campaigns of big fashion labels, and walking down the runways of Chanel and Versace. Nevertheless, two of my favorite models, Noémie Lenoir and Liya Kabede, are featured in this issue. Most of the spread are photographed none other by the talented Steven Meisel

Tried & Tested : Totok Wajah

Koukla in Face Escentials, Salon & Spa, Tested — July 19th, 2008

Everytime I heard the word “Totok”, I always think of kung fu films from when I was a kid - where an old, bearded kung fu master performed a series of point-pressure movements to his opponents (or sometimes his naughty apprentices) so they would freeze - in some very comical poses mind you - and unable to move before the master released him.

Now when describing Totok Wajah, the point-pressure movement is accurate but it won’t make your face freeze in the middle of a smile or worse.. a sneeze. Totok Wajah is actually similar to regular facial, but the therapist will apply pressures in certain points in our faces to relax the muscle and promote blood circulation.

A Splash of Orange

Koukla in Bath & Body, Fragrance — July 18th, 2008

L’Occitane Feu d’Orange Intense was released a few months ago as a follow up to last year’s Ruban d’Orange. As the name suggested, it’s supposed to be a more intense version of Ruban d’Orange using predominantly blood orange notes and a hint of woods.

My husband gave Feu d’Orange EDT to me as a birthday gift and I have been wearing it non stop now. It smells delicious - fresh, juicy, not overly sweet and the woody notes keep it from smelling like another Bath & Body Works-type of fragrances. The lasting power isn’t great, as most L’Occitane fragrances are, but I really don’t mind freshening up with it again in the middle of the day when I need the most ‘pick me up’. You can also try layering it with the Soft Skin Body Oil, which I also got as a present. That way, the gorgeousness of this citrusy fragrance is doubled and you’ll get the scent to last a little bit longer.

L’Occitane Feu d’Orange Intense is limited edition and available in 50 ml bottle which is great because I can never go through an entire 100 ml bottle of perfume before getting bored with it! :)

Airy Jersey Dress

Uberboston in Fashion Splash, Shopping, Trends — July 16th, 2008

jerseydress-fd.jpg

With the hot summer weather kicking into the western hemisphere, and humid weather is practically an issue all year long for a lot of Asian countries, I can’t find anything more comfortable to wear than a jersey dress.

Got one? Where do you usually buy it?
