It was a sunny Saturday morning. I woke up early, made a cup of coffee and brought it to the living room where my daughter was playing with her 2,5-year-old cousin. I’ve got 2 hours before the whole family showed up for a family photo session. 2 hours before the commotion began. So I chose to :

a) go back to sleep

b) excercise

c) dip my hands and feet in hot wax

If you answer C you’re right!

It’s called paraffin manicures and pedicures. Some of you are probably familiar with it, but it was actually my first time. It is basically similar to the regular manicures and pedicures (or “mani pedi” as Jakartan ladies lovingly call them) that involves cleansing, cutting and shaping the nails, cuticles work and massage. Up to this point, I was really enjoying the treatment. Meni pedi is my favorite thing to have at a salon. It was pure indulgent and I wish I could do it more often. I leaned back on my seat while relishing the massage and then the salon lady brought out a plastic container with steaming liquid in it.

“What’s that?” I asked

“The paraffin wax” said the lady

Hmm, I thought it looked hotter than I imagined but what do I know? I dipped my left foot and immediately thought : this must be what it felt like to have your foot caught on fire!

“Ouch ouch OWWW!!” I yelped while trying to get my foot out of the container. But the salon lady didn’t want to hear any of it, she pressed it down and asked me to hold it there for a few more seconds. She said it was gonna get easier but it didn’t. All I could think about was the fact that I had to this 3 more times with my right foot and both of my hands. She lifted my foot up and it was already covered with white paraffin “glove”. She then proceeded to treatment with my other foot and hands and it wasn’t bad as the first time because at least I was more prepared. When all were done, she covered my hands and feet with towel and left it for approx. 15 minutes

Afterwards, the salon lady slipped the “glove” out of my hands and feet and…wow! They felt amazingly soft and supple. This is why people go for paraffin manicures and pedicures. They soften the skin, promote circulation, promote healing and growth of the nails and can even help to relieve arthritic pain.

Admittedly, I still prefer the regular mani pedi. But I actually don’t mind getting my hands and feet submerged in hot wax again some other time because of how good they felt afterwards. If you want to try it, you can go to almost any salon and have the treatment at various costs. My local salon only charges Rp. 60 thousand for both hands and feet! ;)

you know i actually never had it done to my hands, cause i can’t bear waiting without reading a book/magazine(and obviously need both hands for that). gotta try it sometime though….

  2. Koukla says:

You can ask them to do your feet first so you can read while waiting for them to dry and then when it’s time for them to do your hands, you can hold the book with your feet…hahahaha nah just kidding, but you get the idea ;)

    wah… interesting :)
do the wax also took your leg/arm hair?
because if it’s the case, it might be a little strange to have your hair removed only up to the line of glove/socks :)
