MAC Heatherette Collection

Hanzky in Designer, Face Escentials — March 23rd, 2008

MAC just launched its newest collection, called Heatherette a few days ago. The bright pink packaging surely caught everyone’s attention. The eyeshadow and lip colors are perfect for spring. I have been looking for a perfect pink lipstick, but too bad the two pinks that they have is either too fuchsia or too pale, so I didn’t get anything from the collection. Click here to see the complete collection.

By the way, in case you’re wondering who or what Heatherette is. It is actually a label from New York run by Traver Rains and Richie Rich. They are originally famous for their shirts, leather jackets and pants Their signature design is just like the packaging of the MAC Heatherette collection; fun, funky with bright colors and details like glitter, sequins and anything that scream ‘look at me’. Not really my taste, but it’s refreshing to see their crazy attitudes that don’t seem to take fashion too seriously.

Yesterday, Utie and I went for a quick makeover at MAC freestanding store in Galleria. She had a Heatherette collection makeover which turned out really good!!. The application is light but it gives enough coverage and what it seemed like a natural glow. The eyeshadow color makes her eyes pop, and the way it was applied makes it look effortless, like it was just a quick swipe here and there.

Product used from the collection: Eyeshadow Trio 1, Smooth Harmony Beauty Power Blush, Lollipop Loving Lipstick, Bonus Beat Lipglass.

The Magic of Baking Soda

Hanzky in Cheap Trills, Face Escentials, Tested — March 18th, 2008

Unless you’re a baby, you probably need or maybe have used an exfoliating scrub to remove the dead cells from your skin. Babies’ skin exfoliates naturally everyday, that’s why their skin stay healthy and smooth. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with us, we need a lot of help to get a new production of collagen and to let the new rejuvenated skin to surface. That’s why exfoliation should be a part of our beauty regime.

Exfoliating scrub can be found in just about any skin care brands. Haven’t found the right one for you? Here’s the simplest and cheapest way to do it, a tip from Paula Begoun, author of Don’t go the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, and The Beauy Bible. Add a little bit of baking soda to your skin cleanser, mix it with your fingertips and massage in circles all over your face, and rinse. Or you can cleanse first, and exfoliate afterwards by mixing the baking soda with water. Don’t forget to rinse your face with cold water and don’t overdo it, two times a week is enough. I’ve tried this a few times and it makes me feel silly for spending big bucks on Clinique Exfoliating Scrub!

Ikat Trend

DYS in Fashion Splash, Trends — March 17th, 2008

Since Batik has been gaining more exposure and its own audience among young Indonesians lately, we should not forget other traditional fabrics that our nation has, before some country proclaims its copyright again =) ! Indonesia has been blessed with a diversity of arts and crafts. Each of every island in our beloved archipelago has their own cultural characteristics, their own architectures, handicrafts, music, dialects, foods, and last but not least, their very own traditional textiles, like Songket, Ulos, Ikat, and many others that aren’t widely known yet.

Following the ethnic tribal trend / safari chic look, several designers are using Ikat print in their Spring collection. And I thought, such a good timing to value our own traditional textiles and expose ourself to Ikat. Contrary to our traditional Ikat which is usually made through weaving technique, either machine or hand woven (tenun Ikat), those designers in the West are mostly using Ikat as a print on their designs.

New Shape In Town

Koukla in Books & Magazine — March 13th, 2008

If you’ve been wondering where did Indonesia’s Shape magazine go these last couple of months, wonder no more! The magazine simply underwent a major face-lift and now they are back.

The newly revamped US franchise magz features Miss Indonesia 2007 Kamidia Radisti who seems like a cool girl (she listens to Feist, Royksopp, Kings of Convenience and Roxette!) though you gotta envy her abs :( shape.jpg

I don’t work out regularly (which new mom does?), but when I do want to get back in shape, this is the magazine I’d sure be reaching for.

The ‘It’ Chronicle

Hanzky in Editorial — March 13th, 2008

itbagcherry.jpg

We all have heard about the ‘It’ bag phenomenon, like the Balenciagas, the Chloe Paddingtons, etc. It started when Marc Jacobs collaborated with Takashi Murakami to create a line of products decorated with smiley-faced cherry blossoms in 2003. Louis Vuitton sold a staggering $345 million worth of the line in its first year, roughly 10% of the company’s total revenues!! No handbag has come close to achieving the success of the Murakami collection. It’s no secret that every fashion houses hope to create an ‘It’ bag every season, but creating a handbag that guarantees a mile-long waiting list is no easy feat as it needs to have a combination of various factors like the brand’s image, the designer’s alchemy, the needs of women today and a mix of creativity/uniqueness of the design, functionality, exclusivity and quality.

Still, it is easier to do an ‘It’ bag rather than an ‘It’ make up or skin care because bags are easy to spot on, especially when celebrities are toting them everywhere. It’s hard to see a lipstick on somebody’s lips and find out what brand and color it is. That’s why there’s only a few products that have achieved the ‘It’ status. Chanel Black Satin nail polish is one of the rare ‘It’ beauty products, especially since it’s a limited edition, one bottle even sold on eBay for as much as $120 (retail for $20)

Viva Green Tea Face Cleanser & Tonic

Lena in Cheap Trills, Face Escentials, Tested — March 10th, 2008

viva.JPGMany, many years ago I read an article in a fashion glossy which confirmed my suspicion that I can skip expensive face cleansers and should, instead, splurge on face moisturizers and eye creams. Since then, I’ve consistently used face milk cleansers and tonics from Viva Cosmetics, produced by PT Vitapharm, which claims to have been making cosmetics in Indonesia for more than 40 years. The line currently includes an extensive skincare and makeup range; one of their star products is the eyebrow pencil, beloved by many FD forum members.

Viva has several variants of milk cleansers and tonics geared toward different skin types, with three variants for oily skin: cucumber, lemon and averrhoa (i.e. star fruit or belimbing in Indonesian). A bottle of cleanser or face tonic cost less than Rp5,000 each, and the fact that they’ve been around forever (it seems) attest to their effectiveness. Since my skin is oily, I’ve mainly used the cucumber variant, sometimes alternating with the other variants. Recently, Viva has released a new variant, Green Tea. A generous FD Forum member gave me a set of the Green Tea milk cleanser and tonic since she found them incompatible with her skin. It’s a welcome gift since the set wasn’t available in my local grocers at the time and I was curious to try it. A bit wary at first given my friend’s experience, I’ve been using the set now for 2 weeks.
