Primer Review - Makeup Forever All Mat Matifying Base

Koukla in Face Escentials, Tested — December 30th, 2007

So you thought my last post was the end of Primer Review series? I did too! :P Until I was presented with a sample of Makeup Forever’s newest makeup primer All Mat Matifying Base.

This powdered gel formula is colorless and feels very similar to Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer on the skin. It gives you that smooth, silky yet matte finish. I put Makeup Forever Mat Velvet foundation on top of it and I was pleased to learn that the foundation glides on easily on my skin. My only complaint was that it had this strong perfumey smell that gave me a slight headache. Not nice!

Anyway, I was testing both these products on Idul Adha, where it was the longest day I had to spend outside the comfort of my house since I gave birth so I thought it was the proper time to see how well this primer enhanced the longevity of my makeup. And the verdict? Well, at the end of the day, my face still looked shinier than it was in the morning and the “just-get-out-of-the-bathroom-freshness” was gone, however the foundation pretty much stay put.

So even though the formula felt very similar to our favorite primer, the performance sadly can’t compare. But I’d much prefer this product than the other Makeup Forever makeup bases that I’ve tried.

Makeup Forever All Mat Matifying Base is available at all Makeup Forever stores and Senses, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, 2nd Level.

Managing Your Holiday Spending

sLesTa in Shopping Budget — December 28th, 2007

holidayspending.jpg

I know this should have been posted before this past Christmas, but this still would be useful to better prepare you for next Christmas and Holiday season. I know some of you have started writing New Year resolution that probably includes saving money and traveling, so hopefully this list would help you jump start your resolution..:)

—-

For those of you who are celebrating Christmas or even live in the country where Christmas is celebrated commercially, the end of the year season could mean damage to your wallet. But of course, there are ways to shop smart without doing too much damage to your bank account, here are the tips that you may use:

1. Budget your expenses.

Like anything with spending, always start with a budget. You must know how much and what are the price range of gifts you want to buy and how much reduction you can take on your bank account. Once you settle with the number, try to keep it and always keep track against your spending.

2. Write down all of the expenses.

Gift shopping can be a little crazy sometimes, especially with all the sale that’s going around. Sometimes you end up buying stuff that you don’t need just because it’s on a bargain. The most important thing is, to keep track your spending by writing down all of the expenses you have spent. This way, you know if you’re within the limit of your budget or over, if it’s time to stop or to buy more… :)

3. Cash vs. Credit card.

This is the conservative way of spending really. The only reason that it’s good during holiday shopping is that you can keep track your spending without being over budget. If you use your credit card, you end up charging more than you can pay, and if you can’t pay, you end up paying those high interest. You don’t want that, do you? Unless you really did #2, and you are fully aware that you’ll be able to pay all the charges next time the bill arrives, then go ahead with charging it in your credit card. The best way is to use one credit card with the amount of limit that matches your holiday spending budget. Therefore, once the card declines, you know that you’re already over budget. In a way, the strategy of paying things off with credit card is probably good once you know you can manage to keep it within budget. Look at it as a delayed payment because you spend them now, but pay them all off a month later.

Decompress, Destress!

Koukla in Face Escentials — December 27th, 2007

talika.jpg

Ask any new mom what they’d like to have more and the answer will most likely be : sleep!

Yes, even if you feel happier than you’ve ever been with the addition of this tiny person in your home, unfortunately an 8-hour sleep becomes elusive. Your body may adjust to it after 2 weeks (I can even proudly say that I’ve managed to stay awake the whole day without caffeine!), your eyes or the skin around it will not and the lack of a good restful slumber will start to take its toll.

I guess I’m quite lucky that during pregnancy and this crazy period which I call the first month of motherhood, my skin is relatively unaffected. However, I can not say the same thing about my eyes. I constantly wake up with puffy eyes and I start to notice dark circles underneath becoming more prominent. So during one of those seemingly endless nights, I decided to try a cute little product from Talika called Eye Decompress.

Talika Eye Decompress is basically an eye mask but they give you this strip which contains a small pastille and a blue solution. To use it, you put the little pastille into the blue solution, the pastille will then absorb the solution and will “magically” turn into an eye mask before your very eyes! Nifty!

I put the mask on my eyes for 10 minutes and admittedly it was already relaxing by itself. The mask felt cool and soothing on my eyes and it helped if you clear your mind from the poopy diapers you have to change in the next 3 years or so and visualize something relaxing and peaceful….like lying beside an infinity pool with clear, blue water with a glass of Mojitos in your hand while somebody is giving you a back massage. Aaaahhhh….

This 10 minute’s break was so nice that I almost forgot to check the mirror for the result but I did. And even though I had to say that I didn’t see anything dramatic, I could certainly see that my eyes looked more “alive” than before.

The verdict? Don’t count on this product for a magical result. Your eyes will still be puffy the next day (unless Daddy learns to produce breast milk overnight) and the dark circles will not go away, but if what you’re after is a quick “pick me up” for your tired eyes, than go ahead and put the mask on, get your feet up and enjoy!

Talika Eye Decompress is available at all Talika counters and Senses - Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, Level 2.

Manolo Blahnik Collection for Men

DYS in Men's Fashion, Shoes — December 16th, 2007

mensblahnik

Manolo Blahnik relaunches a footwear collection for men after 7 years of absence. The shoe maestro has created a six-piece collection of men shoes, due in store around February 2008. His men line will be a small collection, from Oxfords, sandals, and classic pieces with a twist ( loud prints and vibrant colors, as seen on the picture). I received this news from my husband around a month ago and those 3 shoes are the only preview available. I wasn’t able to find more preview of the complete collection. Looking at those shoes I thought they could be unisex. They would perfectly look great or maybe better on women feet, especially the open-toe sling back blue oxfords (first shoe on the top) *yummy*

So, would you let your Man to wear Manolos?

*I definitely would but unfortunately, my hubby would never wear them for sure, he’d rather stay with his sneakers.*
