India, VOGUE’s newest venture in Asia

Following Vogue China, Vogue is now conquering India, the 2nd most populated country in the world. Vogue India would be the 17th edition of Vogue international.
The first official Vogue India cover, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier and styled by British Vogue fashion director, Lucinda Chambers, would have the “most adored faces in India and internationally”, said Priya Tanna, Vogue India editor-in-chief, formerly of DNA and Times of India. Vogue India inaugural cover features model Gemma Ward with three Bollywood stars (Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra and Preity Zinta) and two Indian supermodels (MoniKangana Dutta and Laxmi Menon), wearing Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Dior, and Gucci.
Strangely, its very first issue has a similar resemblance to the Vogue China cover, also featuring model Gemma Ward and several Chinese supermodels, and photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. Although, it was styled by Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld. Vogue China was launched in 2005, and in Asia alone, there are about five Asian Vogue titles: Vogue Nippon (Japan), Vogue Korea, Vogue Taiwan, Vogue China, and Vogue India, recently.
According to Alex Kuruvilla, managing director of Condé Nast India, this new edition of Vogue is expected to be more colorful and more vibrant than its western editions. The Vogue India woman has the best of both the eastern and western worlds: she wears Jimmy Choo shoes along with her traditional Indian outfit. Priced at 100 rupees, or about $2.50, the title will be published monthly beginning with the October 2007 issue. Quoting Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman of Condé Nast International, on Fashionwiredaily.com, “unlike most other Western publishers, Condé Nast will own and operate its own magazines in India rather than publishing through a joint venture or a license.” His statement doesn’t surprise me at all, knowing how Vogue always emphasizes to strictly maintain its own image. Vogue China and Vogue Nippon seem to always hire the best stylists and photographers in the world to publish their current fashion spreads and covers, instead of using local talents. I wonder whether we would be able to do the same, if one day we’d have Vogue Indonesia?
