Fashions Fade, Style Is Eternal

Hanzky in Editorial — April 25th, 2007

Yupe, itu lah yang di bilang Mr. Yves Saint Laurent. Tapi seperti nya masih banyak ya yang salah kaprah dan menganggap bahwa the term fashionable and stylish is interchangeable when it’s actually not. Being fashionable is not the same as being stylish. One does not necessarily follow the other.

Being fashionable means keeping up with the newest trend, being in accordance with the popular choice, being up to date. Everyone of course can be fashionable, you can easily look up a magazine and buy all the items that are similar to what they claimed as the hot trends off the moment. If you are wearing current trends from head to toe then you fall into the fashionable err..I mean fashion victim category.

But is being fashionable automatically make you stylish? Of course not. To have a style, you have to know what works and looks best on you, your shape, your skin color and what fits your personality. Style is usually influenced by things like culture, nationality, music, arts, age and a myriad of other factors. It’s something that is so you. Being stylish is about looking good and dressing according to the occasion, whether or not the clothes are from the current trend is irrelevant. You can be stylish without being fashionable.

The term ‘Fashion’ sendiri sebenernya terlalu broadly used. People always claim they love fashion. But what is exactly that they love about fashion? Do they love the history of it? Do they mean trends and following celebrity style? Or is it actually shopping? Styling? Designing? Fashion journalism or the business (merchandising) aspect of it? Maybe it’s actually luxury brand that they are more into? I have no idea.

So anyway.. am I fashionable? Absolutely not. Stylish? Not there yet..:p. I still need a little more excitement on my wardrobe..but I believe I am pretty well dressed.. meaning if you look at what I’m wearing, I don’t think you’ll find something that is severely wrong that make you think “what the hell was she thinking?!”. I believe you are what you wear..so I do put some thoughts into my outfits.

How about you? Are you fashionable? or are you stylish? or maybe fashionably stylish..:-)..is that even possible?

i think fashion is overrated nowadays.. everyone could just go with anything and it would be considered stylish or a fashion faux pas for others.. with the media n technology, ppl has more access of all the latest trend / forecast from all over the globe, some ppl become fashion victims by religiously following them and others become editors through their own fashion media *blogs, etc..
myself, ive always loved fashion publishing n styling but at some point, got tired of it after seeing how fashion even the couture and vintage ones are becoming a MASS consumption .. now, im totally unfashionable n boring i must say,, wearing only classic n basic stuff..n totally clueless what’s the meaning of fashion n fashionable itself?
i may just retire from this industry with a big question mark on my forehead

I can’t agree more with you, anonymous and siasisten!
this is just hilarious to see how many ABG AGJ (aka Anak Baru Gede who claims themselves as Anak Gaul Jakarta) out there wearing the same clothes, bags, pants, and shoes just like they’re wearing national school uniform. and hell, they’re just soooo proud of being in the same line.
and the worst thing is people are getting too conscious about fashion that they force themselves to look “fashionable” as time goes by and it’s not even fashionable since they wear it too much. lets say the hottest trend for now is 20s, for them who thinks they are fashionable might end up looking like a time machine..
    see, how funny it is.

Wow, I didn’t even realize that there is a difference between the two (that’s how clueless I am, hehe). But….I think looking good will always be a “fashion”. It’s the bod that makes the clothes, not the clothes that make the bod :). When our physique is well, then we’d be more careful in choosing what we put on us, ngga sembarang pilih aja jadinya. :)

di jakarta, being stylish means: you are carrying the latest bag, dengan rambut kepirang pirangan, preferably panjang dan bawahnya curly, fresh dari salon dengan make up mayan tebel, pokoknya keliatan done up, wearing stilettos, kalung dan earring yang berjuntai juntai, jam yang keliatan mahalnya dan baju nya paling murah dari zara lah…it’s a sad world here..:~(

    Wahhh seru seruu komennya…=)

Anonymous: hihihi…how about the ones that describe themselves as branded?!? I was like..okee dehhh..heheh..

Siasisten: orang orang industry nya sendiri banyak yang udah ’sick’ with fashion ya?..the editor in chief like anna w. and carinne r. don’t even follow trends.
Btw, have you checked http://viewfromthefourthrow.blogspot.com/ ? I’m loving it, hey maybe she is someone you know?..;)

I think fashion blog is becoming a force in fashion industry here in the states, maybe magazines view this as a threat.. but that’s the thing with globalization and the power of internet ..a lot of gap are becoming narrower and it’s not even that hard anymore for people to be famous if they want to. As for me, I’m interested in the industry as a whole and the merchandising aspect of it, my background is marketing and I’ve worked retail to a degree..now I’m starting to learn about journalism too..but yea..I’m still a novice..=).

Yupe everyone ‘loves’ vintage now..but just because you find it at a thrift store doesn’t mean it’s vintage..heheh..

Cheyqua: Hihi..iya bener sih mungkin di Indonesia udah di biasain pake seragam dari tk, sampe kerja juga tetep ada yang harus pake seragam..jadi pada clueless harus pake baju apa kalo nggak ngikutin trend.

Anyway, at least kalo untuk abg yaa..gue masih lebih bisa ngerti deh kalo pada blinded by trends, individuality nya belum keliatan gitu dan juga karena peer pressure..yang gue bingung justru yang tua tua nya and most of them don’t dress that is suitable for their age. Lagian kalo yang udah tua, they are not only blinded by trend but also by brand, mungkin karena udah pada kerja, dah punya uang dan baru bisa afford those branded stuff. It’s the brand mentality that I hate and the fact that they think people who are not wearing branded stuff jadi di pandang sebelah mata.

Modjo: thank you bu..maybe we should print it and distribute it to the ABGs at Citos this Saturday night?…:D

Irish: iya bener banget tuh..looking good will always be a fashion..regardless of the tag inside the clothes and the season they were produced. we can always pick a few trends to enhance our personal style.

Fitri: Wahh…*panik ada yang muji…*..heheheh..sayangnya masih kalah jauh yah sama Nicha..:-)

Mirna: Yupe it’s sad when personal style is lacking. That’s why when I see those parties pictures in the magazines..the ones who catch my eyes are the ones that don’t have style like you’ve mentioned here..:D

Wah.. style ku more or less seperti yg Mirna quoted :p gawat dah hohoho.. abis gimana, with my facial features, the best hairstyle that can go best with me is the blonde long curly style & i love anything that sparks (read: blings) & freshly french-manicured fingers occasionally :)

Anyway, it still takes effort to be able to dress impeccably from head to toe & I still applaud anyone who makes that efforts rather than the ones dressed sloppily, KWIM? :)

wah iya bener juga yang elo bilang chez…you gotta give the girl a credit for trying..it’s hard to look polished from head to toe. I’ve never had much success in trying to look polished..pastii aja rambutnya jadi messy lah, baju nya lecek, make up ilang..dll dll..:D

as far as the style..heheh..don’t worry say, you should dress the way you feel comfortable dressing..cuma aja kalo di jakarta a lot of them dress like that just because everybody else dresses like that..lack of originality jadinya. And the fact that most of them have attitude problem doesn’t help.

    So..don’t worry chez..besides.. I don’t think you wear too much make up..thanks to bareminerals yaa..hahaha…and you don’t live in jkt..so you’re safe..:p

    waa benar skaliii komen2nya!
klo di indo, apalagi jakarta, pasti yaa gaya org2nya yaaa gitu2 aj, sama smua! dan penjelasan hanzky bener jg sih, anak2 mudanya terdorong berpakaian sperti itu krn peer pressure.
jika aku bandingkan sama keadaan di daerah lain sperti eropa/usa/aussie/jepang, mereka gaya berpakaiannya lebih “suka suka gw”. coba aj yaa klo orang2 kita bs kaya gt, ga usah ngikutin mati trend2 yg ada, kan nantinya lucu jg meratiin org2 di mall dgn gaya yg beda dan one-of-a-kind
*eh jd panjang gini sih komennya hehhe

DWD: we love long comments here, heheh. Tapi susah juga sih kalo di Indonesia karena kalo gaya nya aneh sedikit pasti langsung di liatin orang dan di ketawain dehh..jadi nya serba salah juga ya sebenernya?..

tourterelle: i didn’t mean to offend anyone so i’m sorry if i offended you in anyway. i work in media n get to attend almost all the parties that are featured in tattler n other magazines. i deal with the kind of girls i mentioned A LOT. i know it’s actually more on their attitude that i hate than their style n i probably shouldn’t generalized it but that’s the fact that i see in here. they have the newest items and have their hair done the current style and do everything that they think they should be doing and they ended up looking like clones who think they are individual. and they look down to anyone who wears last season items. sad sad sad.
