what to save, what to splurge on beauty care & make up

not everything is created equal and not all of the expensive ones necessarily better than the cheaper ones. here’s what i have found so far from reading all of those magazines, and also from personal experience. btw, i define cheap/inexpensive stuff for the ones you can find at drugstore/walmart and expensive for the ones that can only be found at sephora or other higher end beauty counters.
what to save:
- Cleansers. as long as they cleanse your face really well, why bother spending so much when you can get the same result using the cheap stuff. i’m using cetaphil and i’m happy with it. saya juga ada biotherm cleansing milk which also cleans very well, tapi pasti yang lebih murah juga ada. bottom line is, you should spend less for something you will wash off right away, and spend more for products that stay on your face (moisturizer, night cream, etc)
- Mascara. maybelline is my all time favorite. i have bobbi brown but i still like my maybelline better. lagian mascara shelf life nya nggak lama, jadi mendingan beli yang murah meriah aja.
- Sunscreen. well, untuk seluruh badan, i use neutrogena..tapi kalo untuk muka i find it hard to find the inexpensive ones yang nggak greasy dan bikin muka keliatan berminyak. so far i like shiseido and dr. murad best.
- Lip Balm. the $1 works just as well compare to the $20 ones. burt bees is my favorite.
- Eye Make up Remover. I’ve never used eye make up remover because i feel my cleanser cleans my eyes just as well, do they really have different ingredients for the face and eyes?. pokonya yang jelas kan asal bisa ngebersihin mata dari eyeshadow aja kan?.
- nail polish. i don’t wear nail polish, so i couldn’t careless about this one, heheh..but it’s one of those that you don’t need to spend so much on karena nggak begitu tahan lama.
- Lip Glosses. well, i think no matter what the brand is, they don’t last long on your lips and you have to reapply it throughout the day. the drugstore ones have all kinds of colors imaginable, so you should find the one you like there. my favorite one is from rimmel.
what to splurge:
- Foundation. seperti yang udah pernah di tulis di postingan kemaren kemaren, it’s hard to find the right foundation dan biasanya the higher the brand, the more shades they have jadi kita lebih gampang cara shade yang paling match sama kulit kita. formula nya juga lebih bermacam macam, ada yang liquid, creamy, powder, etc. lagian kalo beli di drugstore itu nggak bisa di coba, tapi kalo beli di sephora or stand alone make up counter bisa di coba dan bisa minta sample juga. I’m using bareEscentual right now and i’m loving it..=)
- Powder. I’m not sure kalo yang ini sih soalnya memang sih banyak higher end brand yang konsistensi nya lebih bagus, lebih silkier and smoother dan juga tahan lama. so if that’s what you’re looking for, you should go for the higher end brand..tapi kalo untuk sehari hari and you don’t mind reapplying it during the day..yang murah meriah juga ok kok..my mom uses bedak Marcks untuk sehari hari nya..hehe dan tetep keliatan bagus bagus aja kok. cocok cocokan aja kali yaa, dan tergantung foundation/moisturizernya juga sih. saya jarang sebenernya pake bedak..heheh karena memang nggak terlalu suka keliatan matte gitu, i like my face to look a little dewy most of the time..jadi nih bedak tabur clinique sama MAC yang compact nggak abis abis, i like them both..sekarang pake bareEscentual juga sih, hehe I’m really sold on their products..:D
- eye shadow & lipstick. higher end brands usually have more quality formulas yang lebih keluar warna nya dan lebih tahan lama, warnanya juga lebih macem macem dan lebih bagus di kulit.
- moisturizer. kalo menurut saya sebenernya sih ini cocok cocokan aja, tapi udah coba beberapa drugstore brands tuh biasanya oily gitu sih
- make up brushes. i didn’t understand this part at first, until i experienced it myself. memang beda deh brush yang mahalan sama yang murah…dulu mikirnya yang penting kan eyeshadownya, ngapain juga beli brush mahal mahal? tapi ternyata, they are worth the investment karena lebih well made, shape nya juga beda, trus density of hairnya juga, dan yang jelas nggak gampang rontok deh. lebih keliatan bagus deh make up nya…beli nya satu satu aja biar nggak berasa…lagian kan cukup beli sekali aja sampe selama bertahun tahun/sampe ilang..heheh.

i agree on the brushes. the best ones are, i think, still from mac. but they’re so damn expensive!!! tapi sekali punya.. tahan lama banget!! tapi gue suka tuh beli yang gak terlalu mahal, tapi travel size. jadi kalo udah rusak bisa tinggal buang lagi.
eh gue mau share story ttg moisturizer. waktu gue masih disana.. gue kan selalu pake moisturizer, apalagi body lotion & lip balm.. it’s a total must!! tapi sejak gue balik ke jakarta.. muka gue mulai jerawatan. bukan jerawatan yang gede2, tapi yang kecil2 gitu.. gak keliatan kalo di foto tapi kalo in person, keliatan banget. dan itu menyebalkan. akhirnya mulailah gue coba ke dokter kulit. dan dokter kulit gue ini top banget. dia gak menawarkan product, hanya service, facial. murah pula! basically she says that the key is to thoroughly clean your skin. not just every night but also do facial. awalnya gue ga terlalu percaya, tapi pas gue cobain facialnya, bener deh, mereka tuh cuma ngebersihin… and it’s totally worth it!
eh tadi mau ngomongin moisturizer.. anyways, salah satu alesannya juga karena sejak gue balik ke jakarta, due to more humid & hot weather, kulit muka gue jadi lebih berminyak disini.. dan gue dikasih tau ga perlu pake moisturizer. awalnya rada susah, tapi akhirnya terbiasa.. sekarang gue hanya pake sunblock (dr kanebo) dan powder. jadi sebenernya moisturizer itu perlu tapi depends with the condition of your skin…

iya brushes gue juga dari MAC, gue belinya yang satu set gitu waktu itu pas lagi christmas jadinya banyak gift set dan lebih murah..tapi katanya sih yang lebih bagus lagi itu brushesnya shu uemura yaa?..gue nggak pernah coba sihh..
bener tuh kalo di jakarta mungkin nggak perlu banget ya moisturizer, apalagi kalo mandinya pake air dingin..kaya di sini kalo pas summer juga kadang nggak pake, apalagi kalo elo pake toner dan tonernya itu udah cukup moisturizing..tapi kalo winter duuuhh moisturizer kering banget kan mukanya, gue lagi yang kalo mandi airnya harus panas banget..heheh
eh ngomong ngomong dokter lo di mana shin? i desperately need a facial juga nih untuk ngilangin blackheads…asal jangan di bintaro aja dokter lo ya?..heheh…

Siap2 yah bu…gue ngeblog di tag elo! hehehe…
cleansers: gue selalu pake 2 macem. kalo lg males, langsung aja cuci dengan Dove facial foam (cheap one) atau my favorite Checks and Balances frothy face wash from Origins (seger banget di muka). tapi kalo lagi rajin, sebelum gue lanjut cuci dgn facial foam di atas, i cleanse it first w/ my Perfectly Clean lotion cleanser from Estee Lauder.
mascara: believe it or not, i never use one! hehe..kyknya ribet aja gitu pake mascara. pernah dipakein mascara sekali seumur2 idup ama make-up artist, it feels weird on my eyes. and it changes my face. hehhehe gak tau deh lbh bagus apa enggak
sunscreen: gak pake juga. males!! hahaa…kalo buat muka, never used one too, since i have spf on my mosturizer n powder already :))…that’s quite enuff
lipbalm: aduh sama banget loh han ama gue!! the one and only: our soooooo good burt bees. tau gak sih, pas gue last year ke US, gue beli sekali selusin? including the tinted ones? hahahaha…
eye makeup remover: i start using it since 2 yrs ago. soalnya daerah mata itu penting say, the skin is more sensitive and delicate. kalo cleanser biasa lebih rough ingridientnya. kdg2 bisa irritate the skin around eyes. gue sih pake yg murah2 aja kok, gentle eye make-up remover from L’oreal-dermo expertise. kalo mo yg canggih sih pake yg Chanel punya tuh, it’s the best! tapi aduuhh mahal yah bo. enggak banget deh buat gue skrg ini ehhehe…nanti2 aja kalo sudah lebih kaya
nailpolish: udh lama gak pake. capek makenya, capek ngapusnya juga hahaha…so i keep my toe/hand’s nail nude :)), but i like french manicure lohhh…only if it’s done @salon ehhee….kalo gak..again, capek makenya. but if i can recommend, one of best nail polishes adalah chanel n nars. warnanya bagus2. especially chanel. tahan lama. dulu pas gue msh suka beli, selalu dari 2 ini.
lipglosses: anything will do :))
foundation: i like my Original Skins-Some Coverage (from Origins again hehe…) and the one from Prescriptives (gue lupa namanya). yg laen2 gue dont even bother to try. suka gak okeh di kulit muka gue. either cakey lah, greasy lah…gak match lah..these two usually make it very natural on my face’s skin
powder: u know wat i use
the superpowder doublefaced (color: matte honey) from Clinique. i’ve used it for almost 15 yrs. oh tp gue skrg sejak krmn keabisan dan belon sempet nitip, gue desperately looking for the rite one, sampe2 gue cobain semua bedak di tiap cosmetics’ counter loh! gila gak sih. and find almost close to this clinique one yaituu….MAC studio fix (NW25). bagus lah, at least gue ada cadangan kalo sampe si clinique didiscontinued hehehe…
eyeshadow: hehe..u know wat i use. tapi gue mix2 sih juga. ada yg dari dior juga, MAC juga, chanel juga, sampe yg cheapo2 kyk maybelinne or covergirls hehehe..
lipstick: ini juga sih variative. tergantung mood. but i like the quality of Chanel’s lipstick. lots of good color, and tahan aja gitu di bibir lama. tp gue sering beli dari revlon juga tuh kalo lagi yg mo cheapo2 hehehe..
makeup brushes: i use only one! just to brush my cheek! jadi yah yg laen2 belon ahli saya. :)…btw, elo belon mention what’s ur splurge on cheek nih? kalo gue, gue suka yg dari Origins juga (lagi2 origins hihihi…) trus, Stila, and the cheekstain from Tarte. ehhehe…they’re all so natural on my cheek.
mosturizer: eh kok gak ada sih? ini penting banget loooo…
yg di atas itu semua gue rata2 gak spend so much sih disono. gue spend more on skincare. well..my mosturizer is Supercharged Moisture cream from Origins. paling cocok!
night cream: ini juga my other splurge. and u know it too..i use advanced night repair from Estee Lauder, plus High pOtency Night a Mins from Origins.
kesimpulan: gue emang penggemar berat Origins yah?? hehe..

hahaha gila gue sampe harus bikin kopi dulu la bacanya..biar enak..heheh…
tuh kan bener elo emang cinta banget sama origins yaa..wahh ternyata elo toh yang borong burt bees nya, pantesan persediaan deket walgreens gue jadi abis gitu..heheheh. nail polish gue juga nggak pake, tapi dulu sempet suka beli beli yang OPI. Nah kalo blush, gue ada dua sih dari Nars..trus ada bronze nya victoria secret sama cheekstain tarte…pernah pake blushnya rimmel tapi nggak keluar gitu yaa..ini gue mau coba blushnya baremineral…
moisturizer ada lagii…gue pake kiehls sekarang sama loccitaine..biasanya selalu pake murad siih..nanti kalo kiehls nya udah abis mo pake estee lauder juga dehh..heheh…

sama ama lo han!! gue juga beli mac nya yang paketan pas lagi sale on christmas.. udah dapet lengkap, ada bag nya pulak!!!
ttg dokter, gue ke dokter eva mulia. cabangnya banyak, tapi gue biasanya ke gandaria (radio dalam) karena paling deket dari rumah gue. sebenernya sih kalo kesana, ga ketemu dokternya, lebih langsung minta perawatan aja.. facial, peeling, mask, facial massage, etc.
hehhe.. si ella nih, nge blog aja numpang!!
speaking of lip gloss, gue suka banget ama lancome juicy tube. dari semuanya itu yang paling enak. soalnya ga terlalu keliatan warnananya, dan gue emang ga suka pake lipstick pada dasarnya, ga punya malah!
tapi kalo lip balm.. ini must wear banget. ampe sekarang tiap malem sebelom tidur gue pasti pake. tapi pilihan gue tuh yang lip medex. murah tapi works!! sayang disini susah nyarinya… gue aja sampe nitip bisa sampe lusinan, buat stock!! sama deh kayak ella..

huihhuiaeiuea…dasar, gak di tag, gak di email, gila2 kita hiahiaia…
OPI byk sih emang colornya han, tapi gak tau kenapa i dont really like using them. hehe…tp since gue udh gak pake2 nailpolish, it doesnt really matter anymore sih hhahaha..
eh iya nih gue origins bgt. i dont know why, kyknya cocok ama kulit gue gitu. mereka ada line u/ combination skin sih. jd gue suka aja. elo dr dulu ya pake murad bukan? kayak si shinta pake chanel ya? buat skincare maksud gue. kalo emang cocok sih emang lbh baik stay with it.
burtbees itu emang okeh. dulu gue nemunya pertama kali pas di seattle. ada outletnya masak kecil gitu?? gue kan always look for the best lip balm, soalnya bibir gue kering mulu, dan suka bermasalah pecah2. dan gak ada yg pernah pass my judgement hehehe…so, so far si burtbees ini yg masih terOK diantara yg lain2nya. gue soalnya hampir udah nyobain segala macem lipbalm.
ta, gue pake lipstick sih. soalnya bibir gue warnanya agak gelap. kalo gak pake apa2 pucet bgt. dulu sih masih merah ranum hahahahaha…tapi kenapa semakin tua semakin tidak ranum *apa seehh* maklum deh…jadi ya at least gue hrs at least tainted with some natural color. in fact, lipstick color gue quite boring, almost semuanya brown mulu hahaha…atau sama ama warna bibir.

boleh juga tuh shin dokter lo di coba, emang gue maunya facial aja…nggak mau ocbat obatannya..soalnya percuma juga gue kan di sini, ntar kalo abis ribet..lagian biasanya obat dari dokter gitu suka work differently in different climate gitu.
hihi ternyata elo sama ella bisa dagang lip balm yaa disana..hehe…
Ella: iya dulu gue pake murad selalu sih, sekarang tinggal moisturizer sama sunscreennya aja. sekarang kayanya gue lebih pingin pake skincare dari company gede aja deh dan yang udah puluhan taun gitu, kayanya harusnya kan lebih ok yaa..mereka lebih banyak research nya, pokonya yang jelas gue nggak pernah mau pake skincare dari company yang main productnya itu make up, kaya MAC gitu misalnya..atau chanel, dior gitu gitu..
